Lucinda sat with the little boy on the floor absolutely fascinated. Jesse was so much more than she had expected. He hadnât bought the story she had told him when they discovered him all alone on the pantry floor, not one bit. When she had brought him into Crowleyâs private room to hole up in until she could decide how to get him out safely he had begun to demand that she tell him the truth. Familiar with the anxieties of children, she told him more lies to avoid upsetting him any more than he was already but it didnât work. He got angry.
Bemused by his fortitude, Lucinda relented and told him the truth. She had been surprised when he sat on the floor and gave her no more grief on the matter. Jesse apparently knew the truth when he heard it.
Despite his silence, she could see that he was taking it hard and she wondered if she should have told him what âmoving onâ was all about. The thought of never seeing his brother again seemed to have really taken the wind out of his sails, even more so than knowing that his mother was not actually here at all and that Lucinda was currently the only person willing to keep him out of the mouth of a monster. Rather than the fear she had expected, that part of the conversation had intrigued him to ask questions. When he heard the whole âmoving onâ story however, he had remained silent throughout her entire speech.
She scuffed the hair on his head. âDonât be upset for your brother, Jesse. Moving on is a good thing. He is safe in the land of the living. Right now heâll just be a little baby, smaller than you, and though I hate to say it, quite possibly even cuter than you. Whoever it was that brought him back into that world would think themselves the luckiest person on the entire planet to have your brother, and I have no doubt in my mind that she will treat him as though he were more precious than gold.â
Jesse looked at her sadly, fresh tears rolled down his face. âBut he is my brudder and I want him back.â
Lucinda melted on the spot. âOh you poor love.â She scooped him up into her lap and pressed his face into the soft skin of her throat. âYou have been through way too much for a little boy,â she crooned.
Pressing the side of her face against his little head she looked around the room at the ridiculous luxuries that Crowley surround himself with, and she wasnât beyond acknowledging herself along with it. The child in her arms had put an abrupt end to all this. If she thought about it, she owed him. Her eyes fell on the bed. She had always thought that bed had represented the hole she felt in her heart when she had pleasured the old bastard. It was round, and massive, and in looking at it and realising that she would never have to fuck him again she found freedom.
